El Camino de Santiago (The way of Saint James) is both a popular and historic pilgrimage walk, with the destination traditionally being the north western Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. Legend has it that here in the city of Santiago, the remains of the apostle Saint James the Great are buried. There isn’t an official starting point because pilgrims used to start their journey from their own home and today there are various pilgrimage routes within Europe which lead to Santiago de Compostela.

I was almost put off applying for an online tefl course because of all the conflicting information out there on the net. This site was a real diamond in the rough find because nowhere else could I find verified and moderated reviews of online tefl courses.
After contacting various schools and weighing up my options I decided that ittp tefl online was going to be the right choice for me because I wanted a certificate which would be internationally recognized and I wanted to study with a school which had the backing of a large number of past student positive reviews.
Because I hadn’t taught English before I took the ittp tefl online 100 hour integrative online course.
As expected from reading other user reviews this turned out to be a great course to study on.
What I especially liked was that ittp continue to help you even when you have completed the course and this was a major plus when it came to interview technique, fine tuning my resume and getting a feel for country teaching specifics.
Neville from ittp helped line up a string of interviews for me and the end result was that I had 2 strong job offers to choose from, just a couple of weeks after finishing the course.

Emily's review of the ITTP TEFL Online All Inclusive 130 hour Int.CertTEFL/TESOL program

As a recent graduate of their online program (all inclusive 130 hour), I have nothing but positives to write about this program in terms of course content and general communication with their office.
It is true that an online course might be for everyone, but for me it was a necessity as  I had to have TEFL certification to be able to extend my work visa.
I signed up with ITTP TEFL Online based on positive reviews on teflonlinereviews and I was initially impressed with the promptness which the ittp office got back to me after I submitted my application and after I paid my course fee. This was a big deal for me because past experience suggested that not every company is so forthright after payment has been sent and accepted.
The course was very user-friendly and logical to follow, and a week after completion I received my certificate without issue.
Again, I’m not claiming that this course will suit everyone’s needs necessarily, but for me it ticked all the boxes and the quickness and ease which I was able to complete it meant that my work visa wasn’t interrupted.

I just completed the ITTP TEFL Online 100 hour Integrative Online course and here is my feedback.
I do just want to add that I took the course on the back of a friend who took the course previously, so ITTP for me wasn’t a complete blind experience.

Positives: The application procedure went very smoothly. I felt the application form questions were relevant and it only took a few days between submitting the application form online and being accepted to the course, with plenty of communication from the ITTP admin in between. There was a slight hiccup making my payment, but this was the fault of my bank and not ITTP (I didn’t know that my bank has in place an automatic block when I try and make an overseas payment). Very reassuring was that within 24 hours of my payment made I received my welcome email package from ITTP, together with my login password for the course. Communication was always prompt and professional. The course itself was very good and much more in depth than I had initially expected and made me realize all the complexities of teaching English to someone who had little or no English language skills. Logically thought out and very easy to follow (for someone like me especially who doesn’t have a lot of online study experience). My online tutor (Joe) was very attentive and helped me through any difficult sections of the course with helpful prompts. Received my certificate at the end of the course and this was a satisfactory certificate for my employer where I now teach English full-time. I thought it might be useful to ask ITTP for a reference letter in the case that I might change jobs in future and this wasn’t an issue for the ITTP admin.

Negatives: It transpires that I paid more for the course than my friend, because Matt applied and paid when they were running a course discount. I knew nothing of this and felt a little gutted that my course cost $100 more than his did (both receiving exactly the same course and services). Also, I felt that at times the course relied too much on intuitive knowledge and in particular in Module 5 I had to ask my tutor many times for his help and support to get through the module. Admittedly I did only come across this wall in the 5th module. I found this module very difficult and I breathed a huge lug of air when I completed it and progressed to Module 6. My tutor was a star, but communication at the weekends was a bit hit and miss.

Overall I can definitely recommend the ITTP TEFL Online course and the certificate has served me well. I know I can contact ITTP at any time for further support and this for me is worth its weight in gold. Just watch out for that 5th Module! :)

There is nothing more frustrating that wanting to find out information or needing a service, and having to wait. Many companies are very lapse when it comes to replying to you! I was very surprised when I sent an email to ITTP and received a very fast reply.
I felt happy about doing a course with ITTP because I knew that if I had a problem whilst completing my course, I could contact either my online tutor or I could just send an email to the email address on the main site. Anytime I needed help with my course or another matter, I would get in contact with either my online tutor or the admin centre and I received a prompt reply enabling me to solve my problem very quickly.  I found the course to be excellent and also the ITTP International Job Guidance Team, who helped me set up my current teaching placement here in Argentina. I guess these are some of the reasons why I see ITTP are the current top rated Online TEFL school. A recommended experience!

Teaching in Indonesia is like living the dream. The sun shines everyday, your job is to teach wonderful students your language and you have an amazing country to explore. The students have given me some incredible memories and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to travel to beautiful places around Indonesia and South East Asia. Hi :-) I have been working within the fields of ELT learner written publication materials and TEFL/TESOL course management for the past 15 years now and throughout these past 15 solid career years I have witnessed on English teaching forums a steady and significant amount of examples of completely false information passed on by self titled "TEFL forum experts" regarding the non-residential form of Teaching English as a Foreign Language course option (Online and Combined courses). It is also my belief that the owners and staff members of Onsite residential TEFL courses who anonymously frequent such forums 'under the radar' are the major source of this established and staunchly defended attempt at preventing people from taking courses other than their own financially lucrative residential Onsite course options.

For those of you not fully familiar with the terms 'Online TEFL', 'Combined TEFL', 'Onsite TEFL', here are their brief definitions:

Online TEFL: an internationally recognized Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification course which is taken as a computer program online and which typically consists of structured modules and the virtual assistance of an online tutor.

Combined TEFL: an internationally recognized Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification course which is taken as a computer program online and which typically consists of structured modules and the virtual assistance of an online tutor. These types of courses also include face-to-face teaching components which may or may not be supervised and which may be taken at home or abroad in the country where you plan on teaching next.

Onsite TEFL: an internationally recognized Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification course which is taken residentially and usually in the country where you plan on teaching. These courses usually come with school accommodation provided at additional expense; typically 2 or 3 times what you would expect to pay than if you traveled to your destination independently and searched accommodation options on your own. These courses also include face-to-face teaching practice components which may mean teaching real students but which often turn out to be simply loosely organized practice teaching with other members of your TEFL course. 

This post lists the 5 more commonly asked forum questions asked, their typical (short version) responses by every ready at the keyboard "forum experts" ('A') and the answer which would reflect the real truth of that original question ('B').

1. Will I find work with an Online TEFL course?

A: This answer is a clear NO! Employers do not recognize these types of qualifications and if you invest in an Online course you will be throwing your money at the wall.

B: Yes, you will find work. There is huge worldwide demand for teachers of English and all that is required for a position as teacher in this industry is a TEFL certificate. ANY type of TEFL certificate will do; meaning either one taken online, a combine course or one taken abroad whilst lodging in school accommodation and attending classes 4 or 5 days a week for 4 weeks.

2. Will a TEFL from an Online course look less important on my Resume than one taken residentially?

A: An Online course is something which will lower the effectiveness of your Resume. Best spend the extra money and invest by taking a residential course, which will add weight to your Resume instead.

B: Schools hardly ever ask if your TEFL course was taken online or residentially. Besides, on a Resume all you should need to list is the name of the TEFL course provider, the number of hours studied on the course and your final grade. Listing whether the course was taken online or onsite is immaterial.

3. Will I become a better trained teacher having taken a Combined, Online or Onsite TEFL course?

A: You can only expect to become a good teacher if you take an Onsite course which covers 120+ hours of face-to-face tuition and which includes a supervised teaching component in excess of 4 hours.

B: Online, combined and residential courses produce both excellent and poor teachers. Both types of courses run a typical duration of 4 weeks and when you have graduated and begin teaching there is definitely an element of continued on the job training. Some people are naturally matched for the wide berth of acquiring basic teaching and people skills and some people are not. A 4-week residential course will not maketh the teacher if the individual is just not cut out to be a teacher, just as also applies to a combined or online course. The opposite also applies.

4. I have been offered a place on an Online TEFL course but it contains no teaching component. Will this place me at a disadvantage when it comes to applying to schools for a teaching position?

A: Schools will not accept your job application if you have not taken a TEFL course with at least 4 hours of supervised teaching practice.

B: Most Online TEFL courses these days clearly take you through all the logical steps of preparing lesson plans and the stages of presenting classes and will prepare you just as sufficiently for when you begin your first paid teaching English class. The standard 4+ teaching practice hours offered by all residential courses is really quite laughable and quite an insignificant amount to be realistically claimed as a deal breaker requirement by employers - you will not be a significantly better teacher or more attractive catch by a school employer.

5. Why are residential TEFL courses significantly more expensive than Online TEFL courses? Is it because they are better and more widely recognized?

A: Yes, you get what you pay for. In the case of an Online TEFL course you pay less and receive less.

B: The only reason why residential courses are more expensive is because the costs surrounding the running of an onsite course are multiplied. Residential school owners must pay for office space, equipment and running. Teachers salaries also factor in significantly. Online courses are able to avoid such heavy costs so when you purchase an Online TEFL course you will only be paying for the course and the online teacher tuition and not, for example, for that classy sofa or art nouveau metallic plant stand sitting in the school hallway. 


Ok, so what should you do and who should you believe?

The answer is simple.

* If you (or your parents) have money to throw about and if you fancy the idea of taking 4 weeks out and spending it studying on a course in a city you always wanted to travel to and with other people who may or may not be similar to yourself then the Onsite residential TEFL course option is probably for you.

* If you have financial or time issues then taking an Online TEFL course will be far healthier on your bank balance and will provide you with up to 6 months to complete your course and at your own pace, with the added bonus of support from your online tutor.

* If you have financial or time issues and don't want to invest in a residential course but would also like to have some face-to-face teaching practice for peace of mind then by taking a Combined TEFL course you will satisfy your requirements.

We suggest you be very wary of anyone who spends vast amounts of their time cruising online forums and promoting onsite residential courses whilst trashing online course options because anyone who spends a significant amount of their time online in guise of an apparent good samaritan provider of impartial information is usually exactly the opposite.

Summer teaching work offer just arrived in on our desk this week...

We have 3 terms and hire a total of 8 teachers for Maderovka.

Our attention was recently brought to an online dialogue, initiated by a HBlendon (of whom we have no records of ever having taken one of our courses) in which this individual claims that we (ITTP) fake reviews and have terrible accommodation. On top of this HBlendon also describes his course experience with ITTP as being far from a positive one.

Firstly, we would like to apologize unreservedly to HBlendon if he or she did in fact take one of our courses and experienced such appalling service. HBlendon, could you please contact me directly to just confirm for me that you are a Client of the program so that we can then take a look at your complaint and see how we can compensate you. We have been running courses now for over 10 years and we really care about the reputation of our company and school product and whilst the vast majority of Clients are satisfied we do understand that not everyone can be and we always encourage both negative and positive feedback so that we can identify where we are going right and where perhaps more work needs to be done to further improve our service.

Secondly, regarding tefl review websites:
I would be extremely wary of some of the TEFL review websites out there which claim to be independent, especially those which run TEFL school advertising on their sites. We had a very unpleasant experience with a couple of these sites last year after receiving some unusual negative reviews (the timing of which coincided with the negative review published by HBlendon) and the behavior of the owners demonstrated to us that perhaps their insistence of being independent and unbiased wasn't exactly reflected in real terms.
We recommend http://www.tefl-courses-reviews.com (previously tefl-reviews.com) because they don't promote any TEFL school advertising and experience has shown to us that they really evaluate each and every review which is published on their site.

We have recently partnered up with Lufthansa airlines and UNICEF. Regarding UNICEF, a percentage of the fee from every new student who signs up for one of our courses goes directly to UNICEF. UNICEF help children in need around the world and we are proud to be charity partner with them.

With over 10 years company experience in international TEFL/TESOL and with over a thousand Graduates to date, we really have no need to fake reviews. It is true that our accommodation option a few years ago was not the best but since March 2012 we have had new accommodation which seems to be bringing us excellent feedback through the verified reviews received on tefl-courses-reviews.com.

This Monday's TEFL Prague Tip

Prague goes a little crazy for New Year's Eve and to catch a piece of the action you will need to make your way down to the Old Town or Wenceslav Square for Midnight to witness the firework madness. This is a potentially dangerous night in the year when fireworks are going off in all directions so please be careful if you do find yourself in the center later on.
